Final Overall Evaluation

Final Overall Evaluation

In my opinion, both of my shoots for my exam have been successful and I have managed to achieve multiple outcomes which I am pleased with and feel as though all the outcomes reflect my chosen topic of 'the passing of time' well. My work has continued to develop throughout my Component 2 work, right up to now with the exam.

I began the unit by looking at simplistic expressions of the passing of time, such as flowers' life cycles and clocks. This is what influenced me for my second shoot for the exam, which looked at clocks. The exam shoot was very similar to my second shoot for the unit but the exam shoot appeared to be improved in many ways as the images were defiantly more effective and interesting. I chose to shoot the clocks from varying angles which I didn't do for my first shoot. I liked the outcomes and think they they showed multiple elements which assisted them in being effective. I think they the images were framed much better than my initial preparatory shoot was and I found that the way I framed the image helped to determine the effect which the image had. Also, many of my images for my second exam shoot showed a narrow depth of field. I think that this helped to add more interest to the image and also helped to focus the audiences eye to certain areas of images more than others. I edited my images from shoot 2 using Photoshop. I mainly just edited my images simply by adapting the curves and levels to make them bolder and more striking. However, I also edited a few of them in black and white which I thought looked effective, yet still preferred the more simply edited ones as I felt that they worked better as a series. My first exam shoot was linked more to the second half of my Component 2 work. In my second half of work, I explored the use of long exposure which began by looking at light trails but proceeded to look at movement. I took inspiration from the likes of Alexey Titarenko and others, such as Kang Seon Jun and Jesus Chapa-Malacara, all who explore the passing of time via looking at movement through the use of long exposure. Shoot 1 for my exam was mainly influenced by the work of Alexey Titarenko. I decided to create images which followed the theme of shoot 8 from my preparatory work. I used long exposure to capture a variety of images of people moving. I did this in wooded areas in order to create a slightly creepy and unnerving mood to the image which I thought was similar to Alexey Titarenko's work. I then edited my images using Photoshop, where I selected around the figures in my images and selectively made them black and white. I used the feather tool to make this appear more natural and feel that this was effective at giving my images a more original and personal touch. I got the idea of using the black and white from Alexey Titarenko, whose entire images are in black and white. I liked the outcome from using the selective black and white as I feel as though it helped to make the figures appear ghostly and somewhat supernatural. This therefore contributes to the unnerving feel which I was trying to achieve within my images. After my two shoots, I decided to do some further experimentation, where I worked to combine the two shoots together into some more final outcomes. I took some images which did not show long exposure, which I had captured during my first shoot on location and overlayed an image from my clock shoot over the top. I then decreased the opacity of the second layer which helped to blend the two images together. I feel that this was very effective as it showed both the shoots combined and also helped to add interest to the clock shoot. In addition to this, the images from the experimentation could be thought to present the idea of time stood still, especially as the images of the figure do not show long exposure and instead show a still image. The pose that the figure is in could also suggest the idea of being deep in thought. Overall, I really like the extra edits and experiments and think that they too are effective at expressing the topic of 'the passing of time'.

I feel as though my photography skills have been drastically improved as a result of this project.  I have learnt a number of different technical and aesthetic skills and have more importantly, got to grips with how to use the camera effectively and how the settings can affect the final outcomes significantly. During the unit, I feel as though my technical skills have improved the most. I have learnt many new techniques with the camera operation such as learning the technique of long exposure. At first, I found this to be a challenge, but as the unit progressed, I found that I was getting to grips with how to use the long exposure and was also learning the camera settings which were required to use this technique. In addition to this, I have found that my framing of images has improved which has assisted my photographs in reaching their full potential. Also, I feel as though, relating to framing, my composition of images has improved and feel as though I am more willing to now experiment with new compositions in order to try to achieve more effective images. As well as my technical skills, I feel as though my aesthetic skills have also improved. During the project, I have managed to experiment with many new and different ways of presenting my work as well as in general, improving my photoshop skills by learning new techniques such as layering which I have used in my combined shoots experiments. During the unit, I used GIFs to show the passing of time. I created these using Photoshop and they allowed me to show many images which all were presented in a series. I think that this was a very effective and helped me to tell a sort of story.

Overall, I feel that I was successful at responding to the exam paper as I feel as though all my preparatory and exam shoots showed relevance to the topic of 'the passing of time'. I feel as though I managed to create some strong images involving long exposure and also feel that my final experiments which combined the two exam shoots were also effective as they presented the passing of time in a more unique and interesting way. However, areas where I may want to improve my work further is the framing of images as I found, especially when creating GIFs, that the framing of all my images were very different whereas I wanted them to be more uniform. Nevertheless, I feel as though I responded to the exam question to the best of my ability and feel as though my photography skills have developed greatly as a result of the project. Overall, I am very pleased with my final exam outcomes and feel as though they are a successful conclusion to the topic of 'the passing of time'.

Further Experimentation - Combined Shoots - Final Pieces

Combined Shoots - Final Pieces

Below shows three final outcomes from my further experimentation. I feel as though the two exam shoots work very well together and could be thought to show the idea of time stood still. I really like the vibrancy of the colour in the images as this helps to draw the eye in more and also makes the image more attractive to the viewer. I like the fact that the background layer is very bold and vibrant whereas the second layer is less vibrant and has a sort of ghostly feel. I think that this is very effective and supports the idea of a frozen moment in time.

For further experimentation, I decided to merge my two shoots together. I was apprehensive as to how this would turn out but I was extremely pleased with the outcome and feel that it looks very effective and presents the topic of the passing of time very well.
Below shows some screenshots to show how I created one of the outcomes.

Firstly, I selected all of the photograph which I wanted to overlay. I clicked 'select', then 'all'.

I then copied my selected area by clicking on 'edit' and then selecting 'copy'.

I then pasted the layer onto the background layer, which in this case, was an image which I had taken as part of shoot 1. To do this, I selected 'edit' and then 'paste'.

I then adapted the opacity and fill of the clock layer which made the layer look ghostly and more subtle. I did this using the controls on the right hand side of the screen.

Finally, I adapted the curves of the image in order to make the overall image brighter and more bold and striking for the audience.

Below shows the final outcome from my further experimentation shown above which I did using Photoshop.

Shoot 2 - Final Evalutation

Shoot 2 - Final Evaluation

Shoot 2 for my exam was influenced mainly by my own preparatory work. Although the outcomes are quite simplistic, I feel as though they are effective at expressing my chosen topic of 'the passing of time'.

The second exam shoot related more to the first half of my component 2 work than the second. I feel as though my preparatory shoot 2 was the most influential for this exam shoot. However, I feel that this shoot for the exam was better than the initial one and showed multiple improvements. Improvements included the fact that I shot the clocks from alternative and multiple angles. This was very effective as it showed the clock from different perspectives and also could be thought to relate to the idea of distorted time due to the image being different to what you would expect to see. I edited all my images using Photoshop and like the way that they all turned out. I edited the majority by adapting the curves and levels in order to create a look which was more similar to the original but was enhanced. I liked these images and thought they worked very well as a series. I also edited a few of my straight images in black and white. I liked these outcomes as the filter gave them a slightly more sinister feel which looked effective due to the clocks I shot appearing to be quite old. In addition, I liked the lighting of the images as it was bright and natural due to the images being shot on location. Due to the fact that the day was very bright and sunny, I set my camera settings to ISO 100, f/16 with my shutter speed at 1/125 second. This helped me to create images that were effective and these settings suited the conditions.

Although by doing this shoot I didn't learn any major technical skills, I did learn more about how to effectively edit using photoshop to make images more attractive and bold. In addition to this, I feel as though I learnt more about how to frame an image as the framing of the clocks was vital in order to achieve a successful image. In my preparatory work which related to this shoot, I did learn a new way of presenting my work which was in the form of a GIF. I created these using photoshop and they were effective at presenting the passing of time in the form of a moving series of images which showed the clock hands changing. Although I have not created one of these for my exam shoot due to the slightly differing nature of the photographs, I feel as though it was an effective and interesting way of presenting the passing of time to the audience.

With this shoot, I feel that I was successful at responding to the exam paper as the images clearly presented the topic of 'the passing of time'. However, I feel as though my images were a little too simplistic and feel as though they would have been more effective if they had had more interest added to them as this would draw the viewers eye in more. I will look at experimenting further with the images to explore the concept further. Nevertheless, I do feel that the images are successful by themselves due to the interesting angles and the narrow depth of field which helps to make the images appear more defined and interesting. In addition to this, I really like the shadows which have been created within the images as these make it appear as though there are multiple clock hands and this can also be thought to support the idea of distorted time.

Shoot 2 - Final Pieces

Shoot 2 - Final Pieces

These final pieces link well to my preparatory work. I like the outcomes that I have achieved from this shoot and feel as though they have worked well together as a series. The shoot mostly relates to my second shoot in my component 2 work, although I feel that this shoot has shown improvements from the first. I think that this shoot is much more interesting and shows the concept of distorted time by the clocks being photographed from alternative and different angles. I feel that my second shoot also shows the passing of time well in a simplistic, yet still effective way.

Shoot 2 - Work Record

Shoot 2 - Work Record

Date of Shoot -
19th April 2016
Start time - 11.50am
Finish time -1.00pm

Plans for the Shoot -
My plans for this shoot was to take photographs of clocks from interesting and different angles. I planned that this shoot would be somewhat similar to shoot 2 of my component 2 work. I plan to do the shoot on the morning of the 19th April during the set exam time. I also hoped to shoot a variety of clocks during the shoot which would therefore clearly relate to the passing of time.

What I hoped to achieve -
I hoped to achieve a series of images which focused on the passing of time from a more simplistic perspective. I hoped to create images which were taken from more interesting and alternative angles to give the impression of distorted time. I also hoped that my shoot would resemble my previous shoot 2 work in my Component 2 as I felt that this was effective and that a modified version for the exam would be successful.

What I actually achieved -
I feel as though overall, my shoot was very successful. I liked shooting the clock from different angles as I was able to create some very interesting and even slightly distorted images. I liked the element of the narrow depth of field which I achieved in many of my close up photographs. In addition, I feel the images were successful due to the fact that they clearly present my chosen topic of 'the passing of time'. Personally, I like the images from the shoot which are slightly more alternative and show the clock from a very altered perspective. I think that this makes the image more effective as it makes it not so obvious at first glance. I feel that this is beneficial as it makes the audience more likely to view and fully give the image their attention when it is not so obvious and simplistic. Below shows two images from my shoot.

This was my favourite image from the shoot. I really like the way that it clearly portrays a clock but from an alternative angle. I feel as though this gives the idea of distorted time which I feel adds interest to the image and also makes the viewer's eye more drawn in. I like the element of the narrow depth of field and especially like the lighting of the image. However, this had nothing to do with me as I shot the image outside on a sunny day. I also like the shadows created within the image which also add to the feeling of distorted time due to the multiple clock hands. I edited the image using Photoshop and adapted the curves and levels in order to achieve a bolder and more striking image.

This image was my least favourite from the shoot. Although not unsuccessful, I feel that this image is rather boring and does not possess the same feel and interest as my other images. However, despite this, the image still shows a narrow depth of field and also clearly shows the idea of time passing due to the time being clearly shown on the clock.

What I am going to do next -
Overall, I am happy with how my second exam shoot went. I feel as though it is similar to shoot 2 of my component 2 but also feel as though some major improvements had taken place which had therefore made the images more interesting and the images more striking and bold. However, if I were to shoot again, I would perhaps try to shoot in the studio in order to achieve a more unnerving and creepy feel by using low key lighting. I feel that this would be an effective and successful experiment to do with the shoot but am completely happy with what I achieved by shooting on location.

Shoot 2 - Straight Images

Shoot 2 - Straight Images

The images below were all taken by myself during the exam time. I like how the images are edited as I think that the more saturated images look more effective and therefore help to draw the viewers attention to them more. Also, I like the fact that the clocks have been shot from alternative angles as this helps to add interest to the images. It also allows the audience to view an alternative perspective of the clocks which therefore could be thought to relate to having an alternative view on time.

I also experimented with making my images black and white. I like the outcomes and think that they are successful as they change the meaning of the images. The images in black and white have a more sinister and unnerving feel to them. The black and white also helps to make the images appear older and therefore showing a different time period which clearly relates to the topic of the passing of time.

I especially like the image below as in my opinion, it looks a little like the moon due to the fact that the clock has speckles on it and also because the background is a block black colour. This therefore has made the image more interesting and also has made it so that the viewer's attention is more readily drawn to the image. With this image, I applied the black and white filter and also adapted the curves in order to make the image more bold and striking.

Shoot 1 - Final Evaluation

Shoot 1 - Final Evaluation

Shoot 1 of my exam has been influenced by a wide range of previous shoots as well as photographer research. I like the outcome of shoot 1 and feel as though it links well with the topic of 'the passing of time' due to the fact that I have used long exposure which has worked to capture the movements which have occurred over a set period of time.

Shoot 1 links better to the second half of my component 2 work than my first as the second half was when I began to discover and explore the passing of time via the use of long exposure. My work for shoot 2 also links to the work of certain photographers which have influenced me. These mainly include Jesus Chapa Malacara who I got the inspiration from originally for the use of long exposure and more influentially, Alexey Titarenko. I feel as though Titarenko's work was the most influential to me as I liked the way that he used the black and white to create a more interesting and slightly unnerving image. I took this idea and explored it mainly in shoot 8 of my component 2 work where I got my idea for my final shoot. I liked creating the images to make the subjects appear as ghosts as I thought this gave some added interest as well as a slightly creepy element to my photographs. In addition to this, I feel as though the editing process for these images helped to highlight the long exposure which was in places, a little subtle to begin with. I also feel as though my editing my series in the way I did, I gave the images a sort of story by suggesting that the figure was a ghost through the use of lacking colour and a blurred effect created by the long exposure.

As a result of the project and this series of my work, I feel that I have learnt a lot about my photography and also have developed it well. I have learnt the main new skill which is shooting using long exposure. I found this a tricky skill to master in the beginning but am now finding it rather simple to work out. As a result of learning this skill, I have managed to create some much more effective images which I am proud to have produced. In addition to this technical skill, I have also learnt a few new aesthetic skills. These skills are mainly through the use of Photoshop and include editing using selective colouring and the quick select tool (shown in this series) as well as creating GIFs, photo-strips and many more. All of these new techniques learnt have been essential and highly beneficial when I was presenting my images relating to 'the passing of time', as they have allowed me to produce and present images in differing and alternative ways.

In my opinion, I was successful at responding to the exam paper. To begin with, I had very few ideas but as time went on, I found myself being influenced by many different photographers, all whom had a differing outlook on the topic of time. I therefore was able to become inspired by all of them which then allowed me to create my own response, which took little elements of each artist as inspiration. During the topic, I feel as though my skills have improved quite drastically. I found that towards the end and especially during this shoot, I was more willing to experiment and try new things. Overall, I feel that this final shoot has supported the topic well and feel that it has linked on from my other work significantly. Overall, I feel that my work is strong when creating singular images as they generally look very effective and show what I want them to. However, I feel that an area which I am weaker and I would like to improve is my accuracy of framing images, especially when using a continuous shot and creating a GIF. In addition to this, I would have liked to improve my linking skills when creating a series, however, I feel that the final outcomes for shoot 1 do in fact, work very well as a series.

Shoot 1 - Final Pieces

Shoot 1 - Final Pieces

The series of images below link well to my preparatory work for the topic of 'the passing of time'. I like the outcomes and feel that they link and were influenced by the work of Alexey Titarenko by means of the fact they they use black and white filters as well as the technique of long exposure. The images also link well to many of my previous component 2 shoots but in particular, are similar to the images which I captured and edited for shoot 8. In my opinion, the images work well to show the passing of time due to the use of long exposure which helps to capture the movements which have occurred during a set time frame.

Shoot 1 - Work Record

Shoot 1 - Work Record

Date of Shoot -
19th April 2016
Start time - 10am
Finish time - 11.50am

Plans for the Shoot -
My plans for this shoot was to use long exposure on location to create some interesting and effective images involving movement. I plan to get someone to come with me to be in my photographs and plan to shoot them walking and moving around the woods, which will hopefully allow me to achieve a ghostly effect. I planned to shoot in mainly wooded areas in order to get a spooky and slightly creepy feel to my images. I planned to do this on the morning of the 19th April during the set exam time. I also plan to take a tripod with me in order to keep my camera steady which will allow me to keep the background in focus while creating a blurred effect on the person who would be moving.

What I hoped to achieve -
I hoped to achieve a series of images which depicted movement and used long exposure. I also hoped that this would give a ghostly feel and effect to the image which would follow a similar style to Alexey Titarenko's work. I hoped that, for my first exam shoot, I would be able to depict images which were similar to that of shoot 8 in my Component 2 work as I thought that this worked very well and were successful at creating a creepy and slightly unnerving feel to the image.

What I actually achieved -
I achieved a successful shoot overall. I like the outcomes and feel that they show what I wanted them to very well. I like the way that the final images have turned out and also like the way that they present a very ghostly effect. In this way, I feel that they like they link very well to the work of Alexey Titarenko and also present the theme of the passing of time well in terms of the fact they I used long exposure to create them. Below shows two images from my first exam shoot.

This was my favourite image from my first exam shoot. I really like the way that the long exposure has created the effect of the two faces as I feel that this is effective as well at successful at putting across the ghostly feel which I was hoping for. The overall shoot was inspired by Alexey Titarenko's work as I really liked the original and slightly creepy way in which he presents the passing of time in his images. I like the fact that this image is edited so that the figure is in black and white as this creates interest within the image and also contributes to the ghostly and unnerving feel. I also like the location which this image has been shot at as it is rather interesting with the trees behind the person as well as the patches of light and shadow. I took this image using a tripod so that I was able to reduce the blurring of the entire image and also shot this image with 0.8 second shutter speed and my f/stop value at 22.

This was my least favourite image from the shoot. I do not like the image as it is completely unclear as to what the image is trying to portray and the figure is not obvious. I took the image with a 1 second shutter speed which I feel was too long which is why this image was not so effective. Although you are able to somewhat see what is happening, I do not feel that the image above has as much interest or is as effective as my other images. I personally prefer the images where the figures are blurred and ghostly, yet still have enough definition for me to be able to use the quick select tool to apply a black and white filter. Overall, although this image is not unsuccessful, it is also not completely what I wanted and therefore is my least favourite image from the shoot.

What I am going to do next -
Overall, I am very happy with how my first exam shoot went. I like the outcomes and feel that they work well as a series and also work well to convey the theme of 'the passing of time'. However, if I were to shoot again, I would try to carry out the shoot on a more dull and dreary day so that I would be able to have a longer shutter speed. When I carried out this shoot, it was very sunny and bright, so I mainly had to remain in shadowed wooded areas in order to achieve the type of long exposure which I wanted.

Editing Process - Ghostly Images

Editing Process - Ghostly Outcomes

Below shows some screen shots which I took to present the editing process. It shows how I made the figures black and white and shows how I made the overall image more successful with the use of Photoshop.

Firstly, I selected and opened my chosen image. I used the quick select tool to select the outlines of the figure.

I then selected the black and white filter and used the feathering to blend the filter into the image better.

I then adapted the curves to make the overall image more aesthetically pleasing and make the background brighter.

Finally, I sharpened the image to make the overall quality better and also to help the ghostly figure stand out more.

Below shows the image and final outcome which is shown in the screenshots as a result of editing.

Shoot 1 - Straight Images

Shoot 1 - Straight Images

I really like the image which has occurred from the editing above. It appears very ghostly and unnerving due to the persons face being selectively in black and white. The photograph was taken with a 0.6 second shutter speed. I like the way that the tree is in focus but the person is blurred as this creates the feeling of the figure being mysterious.

This was a photograph which I captured very early on in the shoot. I like the outcome after editing and think that it looks effective and presents a ghostly looking figure which was what I wanted to achieve as a result of my shoots. I really like the outcome and think that it is very bold. I also like the shapes created by the person due to the use of the long exposure technique.

For this image, I got my subject to stand directly in front of the camera and move up and down. This was effective as it gave the impression of a stationary ghostly figure. I like the way that this image is edited as I really think it helps to reinforce the ghostly element which I was trying to portray.

This image conveys a ghostly feeling as well due to the use of long exposure and the editing process. I like the way that the image appears to have two faces as this makes the image both interesting as well as slightly creepy. To achieve this image, I got my subject to jump up and down which therefore helped me to capture this effect.

This image is rather similar to the one above. I like the outcome and feel that it is very effective at showing 'the passing of time' through the use of long exposure. Also, it links well to the work of Alexey Titarenko due to the slightly creepy nature of the image as well as the black and white filter which I have integrated into my work.

With this image, I went for the same effect as my other images so that they worked as a sort of series. I like the image and think that the black and white figure works well with the vibrant greens which are present in the background. I like the outcome and feel that the image is successful at drawing in the viewers eye and attracting attention.

I like the outcome and think that it is very effective at presenting my topic of the passing of time in my inspirational artists style who is Alexey Titarenko. I like the outcome and feel that it also demonstrates the long exposure technique well. I like how the figure seems to be lurking and I think that this helps to make the overall image more interesting and makes for a successful image.

Below shows a few more straight images which are edited simply, by just adapting the curves and levels using Photoshop.
